Picture-postcard Heidelberg is guarded by its famous castle halfway up a hill. If you don’t fancy walking, a funicular railway goes there and continues to Königstuhl Mountain whose views are fit for the king it is named after. Dating to the 13th century, the ruined castle has peaceful gardens to wander, and the Heidelberg Tun, the world’s biggest wine barrel. And big it is!
At the foot of the hill is cobbled Hauptstrasse, supposedly Germany’s longest pedestrian shopping street selling traditional German beer mugs amongst other things. Also here are pavement cafes, the odd bierkeller and several Heidelberg hotels.
A short walk west is the Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit), towering above the Baroque old town. Its square is the site of the Heidelberg Christmas markets, while to the north the beautiful Old Bridge crosses the Neckar River and ends at a twin-towered city gate.
Further west is Heidelberg University, the oldest in Germany and with a national reputation to rival Cambridge, its twin city. Over the river, Neckarwiese is a riverside park popular with students for a barbecue and beer, while by night the city’s many bars stay open until the early hours (and beyond!).
The nearest airports – Frankfurt and Stuttgart – both offer quick access by train to the Heidelberg accommodation on Booking.com

Heidelberg station could do with a luggage storage facility at the train station. Though there is one at the tourist office just outside the station, its expensive and available during the working hours of the tourist office which is 10:00 - 17:00 hrs. It is not run by the Tourist Office but by another service provider.

Heidelberg is a stunning place, but perhaps it's a victim of its own success and I would think twice about going there at the height of the tourist season. Even on a wet Saturday morning in May, the old bridge was packed with Chinese tourists taking selfies, so I can't begin to imagine what it's like in the summer. My advice would be to go off season, have an early breakfast and wander the streets before the shops open.

Heidelberg is probably the most beautiful city I have visited in Germany. It looks like something out of a fairy tale. You can also enjoy nature in this city, I took the philosopher way and ended up on top of a mountain. It was just fantastic.

We just stopped for one night, between trains so just had a few hours and the evening. The Altstadt was very nice to wander round, and for a beer and dinner. I would like to go back and visit the castle, and see more of the town and area.

Christmas Market and all the wonderful Christmas shops.
Christmas Market and all the wonderful Christmas shops. Castle, funicular railway and the Old Town. The riverside, cafes and lovely restaurants, and just wandering through alleyways and coming upon lovely finds. Super friendly people and feeling really safe.
Super clean, feel-like-home apartment with very well equipped rooms and kitchen, and beautiful garden,as well as an access to a small mountain with magnificent view on top.
Mrs. Ludmila, the nice host was so kind to us and made efforts for helping us for our laundry that we do not need to come back for moving washed clothes to dryer, all clothes were nicely folded after we get back from whole day trip, these are extremely helpful values added services provided to us.
We strongly recommend the hotel to everyone will stay in Heidelberg.
Clean and modern hotel , not far from railway station in Heidelberg. The apartment had a kitchenette with all necessary appliances and utensils. Hotel has a nice big lobby with a bar, a huge dinning room serving an outstanding daily buffet breakfast , room connected with a beautiful terrace with umbrellas .
The staff was polite ,helpful and attentive, providing us with a town map and information
For key collection, my phone didn't work, but my daughter was already in Germany and had a German cell phone that worked. However, I noticed after we got the keys the there is a public telephone right outside this apartment location. Louisa was super quick to get over to the apartment and let us in once we contacted her, and if you have to wait, there's a very nice coffee bar downstairs.
A very nice, clean, quiet hotel in the heart of Heidelberg-Altstadt. Our group of 4 had 4 single rooms, and all rooms were clean & comfortable. All four of us were very satisfied with this hotel and we will definitively stay here when we go here again. The staff members are very friendly and helpful. There was a nice breakfast offering that had everything we needed.
We love getting over jet lag in Heidelberg at the Hotel am Schloss. Daily breakfast is perfect and with a view! Parking is on-site and they offer a discount. It's next to the train for the castle, and within a block of the Christmas Market (3 areas). The bridge is a few blocks away. Plenty of restaurants and small markets for all of your needs.
I have been booking hotels for my sister as an encouragement for traveling alone for her first time.
She said this hotel was one of the best hotel she have been in Europe, and the reception was one of the kindest. It was indeed the best hotel you can think of when you are in Heidelberg, very close to train station with warm charming hotel!
A delightful stay in a lovely hotel in the heart of old Heidelberg. The position cannot be bettered, being on the street leading from the main square to the river bridge. The restaurant serves delicious local food. Isobel is a warm and welcoming host. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. I look forward to a return visit one day.
Everything! The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was surprisingly large. The beds were comfortable. The breakfast was excellent. The price quality ratio is just and the hotel is right in the middle of the old town. In short: Hotel am Rathaus is an excellent base for exploring the old town of Heidelberg.
We had a wonderful stay in a comfortable room with a balcony. We had an excellent view of Heidelberg and the river valley below. The hotel also had a beautiful terrace and a delicious breakfast. It was conveniently located next to the funicular for easy access to Heidelberg Castle and the Altstadt.
Splendid, cosy hotel on the hilltop with a breathtaking view of Heidelberg. Wonderful rooms, fully equipped, nice balconies. Very nice breakfast buffet. I had missed the fact that breakfast starts only at 8 AM on Saturdays: showing up at 7AM, I was however given bread, cheese and cold meat.
Loved this family run hotel in a quiet leafy side street in a very pleasant part of Heidelberg, 10 minutes from the station and not too far to walk into the old town. A bonus was the adjoining restaurant which served good value food and was clearly popular with locals.
The hotel is very well located in the heart of Heidelberg. You can take a tram or bus a few steps from the place, the city center is reachable by walk. The room was super clean and well maintained and the breakfast was fantastic. I really appreciated my stay.
Very nice breakfast with an unexpectedly nice view directly up to the Heidelberg Schloss. In the Old Town, but still easily reachable by car, actually it's on top of a multi storey car park (Make sure you read the instructions from the hotel!).
Since we spent only one day in Heidelberg, the Ibis Budget hotel was a good option for us because of the price and because it has a parking lot and is located right next to the city bus station which takes you to the city center in 15 minutes.
The hotel is located overlooking the river Neckar, which is beautiful. In order to get into Heidelberg you need a car, although I'm sure there is a bus connection too.
The room was large and clean. The beds comfy.
Lovely historical Hotel right in the heart of Heidelberg. The room where we stayed was spacious with a view of the Nekar. The beds and pillows were extra comfortable.
Staycity Aparthotels Heidelberg was my last destination in my round trip and it has the most comfortable bed and pillow among all of them. the room was super clean.
We enjoyed an awesome stay at this hotel. Beautiful room, very comfortable bed, and easy walking distance to the heart of old Heidelberg. Highly recommended!
Location was great within walking distance to the Old Town.
Room was clean and spacious even for a family of 4.
Convient with parking right at the hotel.
