A Walk Through History
Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.
Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

I recommend going to the Orthodox church to celebrate the Greek Easter this year it was brilliant, each year it seems to get better and better. I also recommend staying at the MacDonalds New Blossom hotel which is centrally appointed and easy to get to the church via the No:16 bus the hotel has good facilities and does a variety of full English cooked breakfasts it also has good Wi-Fi in each room and good bathing facilities. At an reasonable price. If you still have time board the tour bus and also go for a river trip as well as an good place for shopping and restaurants.

I was here for a planned weekend singing the services in the Cathedral. I loved the atmosphere of the city, the rows had so much character. The Cathedral was amazing and walking the walls was great. We were lucky enough to go into the castle whish was interesting and really informative. I wanted to see more and I want to come back!

Beautiful Roman city.
Beautiful Roman city. People friendly and helpful, as well as caring. I found the people to be unusually warm and friendly for a UK city tbh. I would return to Chester for this reason! Also, a classy city. Lots of good shops, wine bars, etc.

We loved that you could walk the city wall. The historic row with shops on different levels is a must. Chester zoo is great. Military Musuem interesting and friendly staff. The riverside walk with plenty of places to eat.
Only downside is there in a lot to cram in if you only stay for a long weekend.

Highly recommend that the 'Roman Tour', starting outside the Information Centre in the main square, be experienced. Rob, alias 'Sixtus (D-something, The name of his favourite Roman general) Scipio' turns up in full Roman soldier gear with a magic bag containing all sorts of artefacts which illustrate Roman life in the city as he conducts a tour around the main Roman places of interest in the city. The Roman ruins in the basement of Pret a Manger on the high street are impossible to forget. The Cathedral is vast and impressive, with a quiet garden for rest and reflection and there are many timber framed buildings, both several centuries old and Victorian. Highly recommend Huxley's ice cream from next to the clock on Eastgate, (up the steps) especially eaten in the restful 2nd floor sitting room adjacent, with tea, Chester beer and scone/cake. Look out the porthole along Eastgate to the far church, where the River Dee used to come up to when Chester was an important sea port. Colourful, vibrant city, but not too sprawling to walk around in on foot. I will be back!
Stone Villa, Chester was situated in a small cul-de-sac off Hoole Road. It was quite hidden from the main road and this added to the quietness of the Villa. The room was on the ground floor, which we had requested as we both have arthritis and this causes mobility problems. The room was lovely; compact; clean and well decorated. Their breakfast menu was extensive and the food was delicious; we can recommend scramble egg on toasted sour bread with salmon. Their homemade yoghurt is also delicious. All staff were friendly and helpful.
The room was very clean and quiet and I found it very comfortable and well lit, with a kettle, fridge and hair dryer included. The hotel is very conveniently placed within walking distance of local shops and other amenities and is also within walking distance of Chester city centre.
I also enjoyed the Buffet style breakfast. The staff were very courteous and helpfull
There is a reasonable amount of car parking and the carpark at the adjacent Chester House may also be used if all bays at the Chester Court are occupied.
Me and my husband had a wonderful stay in this lovely old Victorian Town house converted into this beautiful B &B in Hoole which is literally just outside of the city center
The owners were amazing ,they run a wonderful place ,very friendly, amazing breakfast, clean spacious room

The hotel is in a great location not far from Chester city centre and with local shops nearby. We appreciated the opportunity to have a meal in the restaurant before heading into the city for an evening event. Staff were very helpful and the room had everything we needed. We would certainly recommend the hotel to family and friends whenever they visited Chester.
The foyer/lobby at this hotel is nice and welcoming. It’s enjoyable to sit and socialize or read. The included breakfast has a few options and is pleasant in their dining room. Staff at breakfast are friendly and welcoming.
Chester is a beautiful town. It’s around a 15 minute walk to the center of Chester, through predominantly residential areas.
Love the building. Was built a long time ago but still well looked after. Very short walk to main street. Staff are friendly and any issue you have is dealt with as fast as they can. If your an ale drinker this will be right up your street as have a micro brewery in cellar and supply the hotel exclusively.
The hotel was lovely and a great location for the city centre. The breakfast was fantastic definitely overall they stay was good value for money. the staff were happy and friendly and we’re always approachable. We stay in Chester quite a lot to visit family and will be booking again in the future.
Breakfast is very good, lots of selection. Grounds surrounding the hotel are very nice, and hotel is located a short drive to Chester Town Centre. Large bus group arrived just before us but staff were on hand to deal with them promptly and they had all been checked in and dispersed within 5 mins.
We have stayed in Chester many times but never at the Crowne Plaza. It is very well located and car parking was excellent. We were made very welcome by all staff and the room was excellent. We used the pool, sauna and steam room but did not eat in the hotel although it did look lovely.
Lovely hotel and location was great. Ideal for walking into the centre of Chester. Close to shos, bars and restaurants. Bar area and restaurant was lovely. Rooms are great and the walk in shower is perfect. Snacks in the room are a nice touch.
The hotel is faultless, from the ease of check in, the room and bed are very comfortable and quiet.
The location is perfect for visiting the sights of Chester.
The breakfast is well organised and plenty of it to set yourself up for the day.
the hotel was pleasingly close to Chester City Centre, the room was quiet as it was far from the lifts. it was very comfortable and had all we needed. the breakfast offered plenty of variety. the staff were friendly and approachable
