A very friendly, welcoming young lady greeted me on arrival. The room was lovely, large, and very clean. Comfortable bed.
Loved the location - it was in a very tranquil setting. May not suit everyone as you need transport to drive to restaurants and shops. I stocked up in Oamaru before my stay. A very restful place to chill out. Take some reading material with you. TV reception?

The North Otago (base in Oamaru) area is a hidden gem. Penguins, seals, steam punk, cheese factory, crayfish and blue cod at Moeraki, historic sites. And good restaurants in Oamaru and the area (Whitestone Diner -- as long as you like cheese, Fat Sally's, Fishwife, Moeraki Tavern, Hampden Fish shop and others).
We go back regularly and the area rarely disappoints. To enjoy fully you need a car.

It's a really cool town, the victorian precinct is amazing and you can spend hours just walking and admiring the buildings. There's a farmers market on Sundays and a lovely train that departs from the front to Steampunk museum to the penguin colony. It's a short but beautiful ride.
There are sea lions and seals everywhere and it's guaranteed you'll take nice pictures from them 😉

The penguin sanctuary was lovely and we saw penguins during the day in the nests. The evening tour was fully booked so get in early if you want to do that.. The steam punk museum was suitably odd and they were very friendly when we got caught in a downpour and stayed sheltering there while they were closing. Plenty of chance to see seals basking on the foreshore.
The victorian precinct however was just a street - possibly more exciting if you are from New Zealand of Australia but we live in a property older than anything on the street so not really that exciting if you are from the UK or the older cities in the US

A very pleasant surprise, was recommended to stop here by a friend, so glad we did. A quirky place , so much history. The Victorian quarter alone was wonderful. Steampunk also worth a look. Easy to walk around the town too. Ps some hilly streets 😀
We were delighted when we stepped into the room. It was very, very nice. Everything was well maintained and very clean. The beds were comfortable. There were 3 extra pillows, extra blanket, iron and ironing board, lots of hangers, hair dryer and the kitchen was well stocked with plates, cups, pans etc. There was a lot of room for our family of 4 adults. The motel staff / owner was very friendly and very accommodating. We would definitely stay there again the next time we are in Oamaru.
I didn’t end up staying at this place. once I arrived and saw the condition of the yard and inside the house, I left. I understand this is a “value” meaning low price property (although I’ve stayed at really nice B&B’s for $60 US in New Zealand)but it is a dump.
Red flags went up immediately meeting Roger and I decided not to stay. Didn’t even matter that I couldn’t get a refund. He did offer to give me a 50%refund if I returned to the house which I didn’t feel comfortable doing.
The studio is clean, artsy and full of creative objects, bed and pillows super comfy.
Bathroom is large and very clean.
There's a kattle, coffee, tea, toaster and microwave and a nice little area where to have your meal.
Room has both a heat pump and heating sistem and it is very private with curtains and separate access.
Trish and Gary are very welcoming and ready to give you all the info needed about Oamaru.
Price super affordable!
I was given a nice quiet upstairs room. Lovely staff. Very nice room service breakfast. We also enjoyed a nice dinner in the restaurant. I would happily stay there again next time I am judging in the Horse section at the North Otago A&P show, which was literally just a 2 min drive from the motel on Ettrick St, Oamaru. I do hope this motel survives the covid down turn …..they deserve to succeed. Thank you. Celia Shrimpton
Absolutely stunning historic home! I had a very comfortable historic room with a beautiful modern ensuite. The room had a fridge, toaster, french press, and kettle with teas, coffee, sugar, and milk provided. Breakfast was simple and delicious, beautifully presented and delivered to your room. Keri is a wonderful host. If you ask, she will provide some of the history of the home and Oamaru. Wonderful stay!
What an amazing place. I paid $93 for a nights accomodation that if in a hotel would have cost $200 and wheel I had to walk 30 metre to the shower which I didn’t have to climb into a bath ti have a shower head flow hit me in the chest. Great shower, great room, awesome facilities, awesome friendly host. Free wifi…don’t tell anyone about this place or I’ll never get a room again!
The layout was lovely and social. Cosy and welcoming. Beautiful gardens so close to the beach. Shame only spent one night would have loved to have spent more time there. Well equipped kitchen and great decor. Very clean and organized slept like a log. Loved Oamaru too quirky art galleries right up my street. With good selection of restaurants 10 mins away. All good 👍
The Brydone is a historic hotel whose location is central to most attraction of Oamaru, The room was small but clean and comfortable with a great shower. The restaurant/café was great and comfortable, just right for listening to the jazz and blues performances we had come to see.
30 minute drive from Oamaru but well worth it. Cute and cozy cabin (former school house) on a sheep farm. Everything you need for home comfort, Wi-Fi, hot shower, comfy bed, washing machine, and basic breakfast. Very welcoming hosts! Love the hens that come and visit!
The motel is just a stone's throw away from the city centre. The room was very spacious for a 2 person stay with a private car porch. The host was very friendly and offered advice on tips to see the blue penguins.
The hotel was in the centre of a very historic and lovely town. Close to the Stones Brewery at the end of the street near the Steam Punk building. Oamaru is a lovely town with some amazing architecture.
What an exceptional place to stay. very warm and spaceous. Fantastic setup and so comfortable. One of the best places we have stayed. Definitely recommend as the place to stay in Oamaru.
It was the perfect location - so close to town but not right in the centre.
Everything was so tidy, clean and beautifully decorated. It felt more like a home than a backpackers.
Really love this place, highly recommend to anyone who plan to visit Oamaru and stay for one night or more. You will definitely love it!
It worth the money you pay for.
To Dunedin and Timaru 1 hour 30 mins. Free blue penguin viewing at Timaru after dark and before dawn. Close to pay to view blue penguin for NZD 40 at Oamaru.
